We see Maths as an essential life skill and a practical tool with which children can make sense of the world around them. We offer children a comprehensive foundation in all areas of Maths through a rich and varied experience of the subject.
All children participate in a daily Maths lesson which follows the principles of the Renewed Framework for Numeracy and is taught where possible as a practical subject. Emphasis is placed on the understanding of and ability to manipulate numbers and being competent in calculations. Children are encouraged to find their own strategies to complete calculations as well as being taught formal methods. Mental arithmetic and problem solving sessions are used effectively to develop children’s mathematical abilities and independent thinking and to create a positive attitude to Maths.
Children are encouraged to use and apply the mathematical skills and understanding they learn in lessons to other areas of the curriculum and real life situations.
Daily Morning Maths Meetings have been introduced where the emphasis is on quick recall of number facts in a fun and interactive way to assist in mathematical fluency.
Our children benefit greatly from a range of good quality mathematical resources, including computer programs and activities on interactive whiteboards.
